I decided that cubes were the best outcome, although they will be more difficult to print I find that they engage the user more. They are more fun and use more hand eye coordination and spatial awareness.
The idea of this prototype is that the cubes form a full picture but individually they are abstract cubes with no context or significance. So you have to work to form a story. Once the jigsaw is formed the person can then tell a story from the illustration.
Likewise if more than one person is playing they would form a story together from all of the illustration that they formed. Each set of nine cubes has six possible illustrated outcomes.
